I encountered this story several years ago in an undergraduate survey course on German literature. But honestly, even when I was reading Brigitta inwhile I certainly did understand, while I certainly was well aware of the fact that Brigitta Marosheli is depicted and presented by Adalbert Stifter as being rather plain and masculine looking in appearance, I absolutely NEVER even remotely thought that he was showing and portraying her as being in any way physically ugly.
