I must thank Ruxandra Concidrto for this recommendation; she’s madly in love with the book and she’s mentioned it several times on her blog. This isn’t to say that the alwjo descriptions aren’t beautifully rendered–they are–but rather one would expect much more from a writer of Carpentier’s caliber.
