Ahen, and some romance. They take on the cold, no food, bullet wounds, and a bunch of people eating gangs. The Dead and The Gone. What makes us any different when we act like the animal inside in a world where only the strong ones survive, where people fight for the same piece of food and they need to steal, to hurt, to kill?

Mullin is clearly an intelligent person, ,ike I’m more than thankful that it comes through in the novel. His name is Ben and I wintef loved him!

All these issues aside, I really did enjoy both Ashfall and Ashen Winter. So what makes us different when we lose all those characteristics, when the hope is gone and the loss of our loved ones is the only lullaby we hear before falling asleep The apocalypse is incredibly realistic and well thought-th I’ll admit it: We’ll publish them on our site once we’ve reviewed them. I am tired, annoyed, frustrated, and hugely disappointed.

Threats abound in the form of bandits, cannibals, and human trafficking. That’s not to say that I don’t love Alex. In fact, Ashen Winter follows in the same vein as its predecessor, harrowing from beginning to end.

If the characters are praying for something good to happen there may be a miracle but there will always be payment. People will become their worst when they are starving and frightened. How hard can it be? But, now, ten months later, Alex and company are still under threat from the mercenaries without a hint of actual military or government aid.


Speaking of Alex, I really enjoyed seeing his character development throughout this novel. In addition, I felt as mulin some areas of this story tended to drag and only the last couple of hundred pages truly seemed to pick up the pace.

The writing is great and you have to admire an author who pays so much attention to detail. In a Handful of Dust.

It hurtles along at an almost break-neck speed, but for a book that’s over a pages, such a pace begins to wear in places. As with Ashfall, the book’s greatest strength is its grittiness. The one problem I had was the way that every single fucking chapter ended with a cliffhanger, almost without exception.

I am very excited to hear that there will be another book in the series, as well as a novella about Darla coming soon. With the transformation of the world, the people that managed to survive begin resorting to any method to maintain their existence including cannibalism and human slavery. I consider it a mark of a good book to play on an assortment of emotions in its reader, and Mike Mullin definitely succeeded in that.
