Unfortunately none of the versions listed above is available on Spotify, but there is an enjoyable account from Jukka Savijoki that can be heard on this albumwhich includes Ian Partridge singing songs for tenor and guitar. The first movement is dreamy and ethereal, having that typically Britten -esque fantasy-like character. This album changed everything. But the Cantata misericordium is far too gentle a work to assert, while Nocturnal is very precisely constructed, not in the least vague about its essential processes.
The fourth movement, “Uneasy,” maintains the nervous, dark mood with ponderous music that lurches ahead at times and stalls at others. The closing panel, “Slow and quiet,” continues without pause and at last presents nocturnql serene and tranquil mood. Dreaming ensues, for once seeming to offer a break from the agitated manner of the previous variants.
