Books by Emilio Lussu

Paola ‘s review Jan 18, This is a rare pearl of a book, a great war memoir of a year of front line experience of an Italian officer endowed with a gread deal of emotional intelligence. He captures his experiences of a year of war on the Asiago aull The main picture draws the terrifying contours of the utter military incompetence of generals put in their place by birth rather than merit?

Lussu’s writing style is reserved and almost dry, and reminded me of Primo Levi – he lets the facts speak for themselves, and they shout so loudly that there is little need for added emphasis. I wrote this review in English as this is one of the very few WWI memoirs that exists in English translation the only one I could find actually.

This on zull own should be enough to put it on the TBR list of anyone with an interest in the great war – but this memoir is much more than “just” that. Oct 07, Hi Manray9, yes I should have been clearer, in English the title is “Sardinian Brigade”, that eilio the same book. This sounds such an interesting book, Paola. I am trying to track it down, but it isn’t in my local library. Pursue an inter-library loan. Oct 08, It is also relatively short: I hope the translation manages to keep the style and the dry humour – but I unn been so far unable to locate the translated version just to check it out, and I had not thought of checking the worldcat!

Thanks for that, Manray9 – I’ll check it out. I’m delighted to see this.

I’ve already picked up a copy of The Luzsu War, cribbing it from your list–I have yet to get to it, alas. It isn’t on offer through Kobo or Amazon here.

Can they be serious? Oct 09, At any rate, that is not the one, the original Italian title of “Enter Mussolini” is “Marcia su Roma e dintorni”, which tranlsates literally as March on and around Rome, and plays with a double meaning of “dintorni” as not just literally surroundings, but as “musing on”. That is on fascism leading up to WW2, I am sure it is going to be interesting too, though I’d need a hell of a coupon for that one: Apr 04, From The White War I learnt that the fighting was similar to the slaughter on the Western Front but fought uphill and in snow.

The Austro-Hungarians were outnumbered up to 8 to 1 but held the high ground. Lussu’s writing shows him be an intelligent and compassionate man.

“Un anno sull’altipiano” Mark Thompson and Andrea Mammone honour Emilio Lussu

This memoir on a little-known campaign ranks as the most focussed and best -written of the WWI I memoirs have read and it was serendipitous to have found it. I am going to look for the film Many Wars Ago which I understand is based on this book. Apr 05, I would also suggest another movie on the first world war, which might be easier to find on youtube, which is called The Great War” “La Grande Guerra”by Mario Monicelli.
