I’ve read it three times now and excesison definitely read it many times more. Besides, they were so insecure in their physical inheritance they had meddled with themselves in all sorts of ways; probably they thought hangovers were just annoying, rather than character-forming and so had, shortsightedly, dispensed with them.

Can I join in? So the plot of Excession is very simple in outline, but difficult to grasp in the details. I don’t need to spend my imaginary time there too. High above, slipping in and out of pink-rubbed layers of cloud like small slow clouds themselves, other creatures moved, dirigibles and kites cruising the upper atmosphere with wings and canopies extended, warming in the watery light of a new day.
God-shit, how we spoil you, eh! Diplomat Byr Genar-Hofoen has been selected by the Culture to undertake a delicate and dangerous mission. There was no time to stop, no opportunity to use its own EM effector on the gun’s controls to prevent it from overloading, nowhere to take cover, and – in the thick mist of gases flooding the corridor – no way of accelerating beyond the danger. The Culture series is one of the most beloved among today’s sf readers, possibly the most beloved but I don’t have any hard figures to back it up so I’ll bwnks that hyperbole out for now.

Fivetide took great pleasure in describing to the human the unique nature of the fish, which were equipped with mouth parts so specialised the fish could not feed normally and had to be raised leeching vital fluids from another type of fish bred specially to fit into their jaws.
The dream had been the most vivid yet, and the longest, finally taking him to the ice-fall in the western face and the accident with the drag line deep buried, that had been, in his memory, submerged beneath all the dread white weight of his remembered pain. Brilliantly inventive and amusing–whole sections read like strings of knowing jokes–but a mess: The book, more than any of the other Culture novels, focuses on the Culture’s Minds as protagonists.

Like when the Sleeper Service is accelerating toward the Excession still a ways out and the other Culture ship is trying to follow it and eventually realizes that the Sleeper Service is not exactly what its been pretending to be. Maybe I picked the wrong book to start with–but I’m not sure if I’ll bother ever trying again. The result was a device which was almost as much a metaphorical pain to live with as it was in a literal sense a pleasure to live within; it looked after you perfectly but it couldn’t help constantly reminding you of the fact.
Oh-oh, that’s a bad sign.
Which is to say, this just feels so wrong. I take it all that doesn’t sound too much like hard work, does it?

There’s a lot of machine talk, space ships with outrageous names, and some seriously fun sports and outlandish games provided by the Affront which have all the entertainment value and high spirits as a bunch of battle-weary dwarfs on an extended stag night.
