The first was the pleasure it gives to transplant the achievements of the mind into other minds dw see them being transformed into entirely new shapes and emanations – in other words, the joy of teaching. Since I am not, I was far less impressed. Its almost as if the plot isn’t the point.
I know this is a personal choice, and others may not be disturbed by the idea that some things might be entirely outside the reach of rational enquiry. People from far away travel to the province of Castalia to witness the annual multi-day festival of games.
Essays on Life and Art. This was the kind of book that makes me want to slap the author by the end for do liberally wasting my time. To make matters worse, there are three appendices purportedly written by the fictional protagonist which are weary things indeed after enduring the prior book. Castilians are also taught meditation; and the book combines both Eastern and Western wisdom. There are many hints throughout the book that all types of special sciences, things outside of mathematics and music theory, are somehow more prosaic and a little too pragmatic.

It is a mysterious game that uses a very expressive symbolic language in which it is equally easy to express the structure of a piece of music or a fragment of a mathematical thought.
Some, but not all, the scholars at Castalia play what is known as the Glass Bead Game. As Castalians, the elite of the elite in the country’s intellectual world, most of the characters have given up worldly pleasures and devote their life to the Order and Game – a ‘Life of the Mind’.
I like Herman Hesse. Throughout Germany, many schools are named after him. Hesse foresees the downfall of occidental culture long before it happened and tells it through the eyes of his protagonist.
I didn’t like this book for several reasons. By which I mean: For me it was nothing new, breathtaking or at least intellectually provoking or challenging. The book is set in a semi-monastic state almost entirely bereft of female characters, so about halfway through I started trying to read it while mentally reversing the gender of all the characters and kept this up intermittently until the end.
They pick and choose the best bits to fit them into their game. The setting is a fictional province of central Europe called Castalia, reserved by political decision for the life of the mind; technology and economic life are kept to a One of my favourite books.

What is this bullshit? The best poems were by no means the ones in which zbalorios poet tried hard to give form to a theory or truth, but the ones in which the poet’s temperament, his capacity for love, his sincerity, humanitarianism, and deep respectability, aba,orios expression.
Interestingly, it’s unclear whether or not Hesse believes it even possible to occupy some middle ground. It is not a question of good or bad, but how they attempt to touch the mind of the reader. These people who read so many articles and listened to so many lectures did not take the time and trouble to strengthen themselves against fear, to combat the dread of death within themselves; they moved spasmodically on through life and had no belief in a tomorrow.
He is aiming for more. However, the title Magister Ludi is misleading, as it implies the book is a straightforward bildungsroman. Share your thoughts with other customers.

Yet, he succeeded in me paying very close attention to the thoughts and actions of his characters who behaves and thinks in ways very different from mine. I don’t even think Hesse knew what the Glass Bead Game hesde. There are no women and absolutely no mention of what would become of an intelligent girl – such a thing apparently doesn’t seem to exist in Hesse’s eyes.
Then the dream died. I recognise the experience.
