This is a really sweet little tolkuen that Tolkien wrote for his son about a puppy who bit the wrong wizard’s trousers and became a toy by way of enchantment. Sign In Don’t have an account? Roverandom is a quick entertaining read, it is not, however, very memorable. It’s a very charming tale, closer in style to “The Hobbit” than LOTR, but lighter and full of colloquialisms and word plays many of which were lost on me!
Somehow, somewhere, the lost dog story just appealed to me.
This is a beautifully whimsical tale that should be a part of every child’s bedtime story collection. Just a short children’s fantasy book, that would no doubt be a classic if it were not so overlooked and forgotten.

But to produce his best work he seems to have needed the intricate framework of warlocks and elves, spells and prophecies, a trellis of cosmology to support the tendrils of roevrandom fullest fantasy. In fact, at this stage Tolkien ‘s fantasy is hardly freestanding.
Roverandom is the anti- The Silmarillion as far as writing style is concerned. That’s not the only reason.

Furthermore, I liked the exploration of friendship between Rover and the folkien and how their dynamic changed after Rover tasted freedom and the scent of his home on earth, where he truly belonged.
In the story, an irritable wizard turns Rover into a toy, and Rover goes to the moon and under the sea in order to find the wizard again to turn him back into a dog. As he embarks on a series of thrilling I’m sure if it was written in the same heavy language of LOTR with its multiple lexicons, then this would be tolkiem near as enjoyable.
