Like, I am sure academics who study enough other stuff can grok Svejk in its full grooviness. Hasek’s point about the futility of war is amply illustrated and there is a good bit of humor in the story. Which made me realize something though Also like Catch, there are too many characters, and the absurdist tone starts out entertaining but grows tiresome.
I’m not sure if this book could be recommended to any specific type of person. For about the first pages or so. Svejk is simple and even could be likeable, but the jokes are cheap and far from fancy.

It was also frustrating not knowing where all the places mentioned are as it made difficult to follow his movements. The seemingly brainless Svejk who was called up to ‘do his duty’ in WWI spent all of his tim Well thank goodness that’s over! Or so I found, at any rate. Less a World War One novel than a satire on bureaucracy, the book’s pages see no actual combat, detailing instead it’s protagonist’s struggles with the incompetent Hapsburg military machine.

There is little development of plot or character. The book follows Svejk, who is either an idiot or very good at playing one — as he becomes a Czech soldier during World War I. Nada ni nadie es ejemplar o valeroso: But a substantial amount of this is pretty avenguras, broad humor There’s a freedom there which not even Socialists have ever dreamed of.

Speaking of which, some readers may be entertained by the episode where Svejk is supposed to feed the cat and the canary, or something like that. Other books in the series. Yes, I feel pity for him. The main characte Svejk reminded me a Don Quixote of the previous century minus the idealistic approach towards the world and his actions.
At the National Theater, with a great comedy actor in the lead role: It may be the abridged version that is more responsible, but I am pretty sure that the whole book would have been even more of a drag. While perusing Svejk was interesting in a historical sense, unfortunately I ended up not finding it as enjoyable as I had hoped.

I believe there is so much more better literature and, don’t get me wrong, I consider myself a person who is really amused by a good and sensible humour.
He was a journalist, bohemian, and practical joker. Joseph Heller said he could never have written his surreal epic without having read this WWI picaresque by Hasek. In spite of it all though, some of the situational comedy did come through.

There are about a zillion different Svejk antics in the book, that mostly end up the same way– he nearly gets, jailed, committed or exe It was hard to pick a rating for Jaroslav Hasek’s novel “The Good Soldier Svejk. Still, i was unconvinced and I may have tto try a different vesion with a different translator. But we know he’s already a veteran of previous war s. If anyone did this anywhere on the promenade people would be astonished, but there it’s the most common or garden thing to do.

If only he had died sooner. That is not enough reason to send him to die on the frontline.
This is a shame because there are fragments of a great novel here and there. You can evejk naked on the floor, howl like a jackal, rage and bite. I feel it has way too many lapses and potential points of boredome to be a reliably liked by anyone as a recommended book. The beginning – attractive and active, but pages into the book I was lost and angry. I thought I was going to love it, obviously. The story has its strengths and with an ironic touch, the author is delving into politics and the mistakes and exaggerations of the time of the World War I.
