That was one of my experiences while reading the book and it really made me feel like I was on a submarine. I imagine that the buchhheim of the book was to show how awful the experience was the officers guntger to U-boats.

The author did a fantastic job of giving a detailed blow-by-blow of daily life under a variety of circumstances from attack to counterattack, from calm seas to storms, from departure to arrival.
